Bouncing Back

From the books and beverages files, here is my latest reading and drinking material... followed by breakfast at Common Grounds cafe.

Colombian hash with sausage, potato hash, avocado, corn, green onion and a fried egg
On an afternoon jog I encountered these friendly fellows.

And another jog that I like to do is looking quite pretty at the moment.

For the play I'm directing, Coda for Shirley, I wanted a bunch of flowers on the set. The flowers need to reflect the character of the home-owner, and I felt that bright, bold, striking natives would suit her no-nonsense attitude. These are also slightly spiky, enduring and practical, like her. And I got to have them on my desk for the day.

Remembrances

Morning jogs are good for the soul - no matter where I am, I try and find a couple of local routes I can run in the morning - nothing too challenging because I generally wake up about halfway through the jog. This is one such undemanding jaunt.

I went out on a lady date to the theatre with a friend. She is saying yes to things. I always say yes to free theatre tickets and bubbles.

Another old favourite run is around Mulligan's Flat, with its helpful signposts.

From The Last Post to Happy, via Queen and Abba, the Canberra High School Orchestra performed with respect and enthusiasm at the morning's Remembrance Day musical commemorations at Belconnen Fresh Food Markets. Nicely done.

Birthday lunch

An afternoon jog takes me past the grounds of the Governor General's Residence. The house is lovely, but the grounds are magnificent. The GG has his/her own golf course, which is generously shared with the local residents.

We didn't get the roos off the green
Rehearsals and planning continue apace for Coda for Shirley, which will be performed in December. I am very appreciative of all the work that has gone into this fine poster, featuring Micki Beckett as the eponymous Shirley.

And here are some images of my birthday lunch at the Turkish Pide House in Woden.

Chichek Dolmasi - Stuffed zucchini flowers with goats and fetta cheese and roasted pine nuts [sic]
Aegean Salad - thinly sliced lamb salad tossed on baby spinach, olives & fetta, roma tomatoes & Lebanese cucumbers dressed with mint yoghurt [sic]
Ocakta Balik - char-grilled Atlantic salmon, infused with garlic & olive oil, with a touch of za'atar dressing

Get your rocks on!

A beautiful afternoon calls for a run around the lake and so that's exactly what I did.

There is a place on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin that is reserved for a National Rock Garden. It purports that the purpose of this is to 'educate and inform present and future generations about Australia's rich geological heritage'.

For now, there is a series of rocks with plaques affixed to them, naming their provenance and significance. They come from around Australia; from the inner depths and the outer coasts. Here they squat randomly on the ground as though they have been washed up, brought down or eroded through a series of natural disasters or geographical phenomena to this single spot. It's odd.

Close up the layers and patterns are remarkable and intriguing. Sections have been sliced away and polished, inviting touch. They are warm and beguiling under the sun, but will clearly be cold and impervious beneath the stars.
